Quick Poll

While creating characters for my latest Cthulhu adventure I thought it might be clever to be not specify their genders.  The genders of the characters aren’t particularly important in this plot, so I thought I’d let the players choose for themselves how they wanted to play their character.  I gave them abmiguous names like “Dr. Smith” and left it at that.

Unfortunately, now that it comes time to write their backgrounds, I’m running into a grammatical problem — what pronouns to use?  I can come up with several options but none of them shout out at me as the best, so I thought I’d take a quick poll:

If you were playing an RPG with characters that have pre-written backgrounds, but you’re allowed to pick their gender, what writing style would you find least jarring?

What writing style works best for unspecified gender characters?
